After the organizer of the planned satanic “Black Mass” in Oklahoma City, a man called Adam Daniels, claimed earlier this month that he had a consecrated host that was given to him “by a friend,” and that he planned to desecrate Jesus in the Holy Eucharist using that consecrated host on September 21st prompted Oklahoma City Archbishop Paul Coakley to file a lawsuit seeking the return of the host, based on the legal theory that the Eucharist has been under the authority of the Catholic Church for over 2,000 years, and that the Church determines how, when, and where it is consecrated and who can receive it. Simply put, the lawsuit said that an unconsumed consecrated host belongs to the Catholic Church. The case must have been a pretty strong one, because the day after the lawsuit was filed, the consecrated host was returned to the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City by way of an attorney representing Mr. Daniels and the occult group that he leads.
When I discussed the Black Mass situation at Harvard earlier this year here at Life At 25, I didn’t get the impression that the students of the Harvard Extension Cultural Studies Club or even the so-called Satanic Temple had a spiritual understanding of what they were doing. After researching the public internet presence of that group, I came to believe that many of them may in fact be atheists or agnostics who were simply trying to get a rise out of Christians, especially out of the Catholic community, and they were likely unaware of the very dark forces which an anti-Christ event such as a Black Mass might unleash. Even so, I thought the reaction of Cardinal Sean O’Malley of Boston to have been completely justified, and I was extremely proud of the way that many Boston-area Catholics reacted in defense of the Kingdom of God, and in defense of Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. I was pleased the event at Harvard was canceled, but one of the reasons that I believe the students of the Harvard Extension finally came to their senses was because they simply never expected the reaction that they received when what they had decided to sanction had been discovered.
Likewise, I’ve looked into what Mr. Daniels’ group, Dakhma of Angra Mainyu, has to say for themselves. One of the things that I discovered is that unlike the “satanists” who were going to put on a Black Mass at Harvard, these devil worshipers openly say that what they are doing is a religion, and they admit to worshiping the devil, in whom they clearly appear to believe. I won’t link to them, but I trust that readers can find their site themselves if they want to confirm the quotes I have found. This organization teaches “classes” promoting their religion:
Classes are available both online and in a classroom setting. Religious ceremonies are also available to those interested in experiencing what the Devil has to offer those who live in the darkness and enjoy its pleasures.
This is a religious organization dedicated to empowering our members through education in occult studies. We also teach the old Persian ideals of duality and devotion to the chosen side. Man has to choose order or chaos, or he will lead guilt ridden self-destructive life. Learn how to work with your inner darkness and harness the powers of chaos. This leads to personal and universal freedom.
Live in the darkness and enjoy its pleasures? Harness the powers of chaos? When I read that, I could just feel the spirit of evil through my computer screen. In searching the group’s site, I also found this statement at the end of a lengthy discussion about the group’s beliefs and their origins:
Since Evil Speech separates mankind from God and predestines him to Hell and allows mankind freedom in this world and the next, why not choose freedom? Choose Angra Mainyu, and become a natural animal of flesh once again.
Literally, this statement is openly encouraging people to choose evil over God and enjoy the pleasures of the flesh merely because they can. There are some theological problems from a Christian/Catholic perspective, but that by itself is not what makes the statement dangerous. Rather, it is destructive because it sounds like a more direct version of a choice given in the early pages of the Bible in Genesis 3:1-5:
Now the serpent was more subtle than any other wild creature that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree of the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden; but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
It appears that Mr. Daniels and his cohorts in Oklahoma City aren’t merely out to make a mockery of Christianity, and specifically of Catholicism, they believe they are serving Satan, and they are out to bring their dark anti-Gospel to the people of Oklahoma City. Archbishop Coakley is right to be concerned, and he and the clergy and people of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City desperately need our prayers and support, because they are going to battle directly with Lucifer and his legions.
Rebecca Hamilton, the recently-retired Catholic Oklahoma legislator who writes the outstanding blog Public Catholic said that the Satanists actually gave back the host in response to a court order, but as she and others have pointed out, the Archbishop can only operate on the assumption that what he received was actually the consecrated host. We can stand in solidarity with Oklahoma City in part by renewing our baptismal promises afresh and pledging ourselves to stand with Holy Mother Church in the fight against all of the powers of the Adversary.
