Mission statement

We welcome all to St. Thomas the Apostle Church with joy. Our joy comes from the belief that we have a dynamic, faith-filled community that is eager to reach out and welcome all. Since its beginning, St. Thomas has been a mission church in a largely non-Catholic area. As we grow in size, our missionary spirit remains alive and well.

One feature of a missionary church is the belief in and commitment to the full, active, and conscious participation by all in the worship, leadership, ministry, and outreach of the parish. There are no spectator seats here. Each of us is called in baptism to take on the life of Christ and be Christ in the world. As Catholics, the center of this journey with Christ is the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist. It is here that we are called, nourished, challenged, and sent into the world.

Our community is culturally, ethnically, and linguistically diverse. About 25 percent of our parish is Spanish-speaking. Although there are challenges in seeking ways to unite all the members of our parish, we believe unity in diversity is not only possible but to be celebrated.

Communication and transparency are crucial to the full, active, and conscious participation of all members of our parish. Pastoral, strategic, and financial planning is regularly communicated to parishioners through the parish website, direct mail, bulletins, newsletters, town hall meetings, and announcements at Mass. There is no question that cannot be asked, and there is great participation on all levels in the development and implementation of the pastoral ministry of our parish.

Adult faith formation is the ongoing exploration of and reflection on the depths of our faith and how it relates to the world. We encourage all adults to take advantage of the many opportunities to become lifelong learners in their faith. Through continual growth we become better equipped to carry out the mandate given to us by Jesus: “Go out and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

We look forward to meeting you and learning your name. In addition to being a church without a spectator’s section, we also place a high value on personal connection. We encourage everyone to wear a nametag so that no one becomes just a face or a number in the crowd. God calls each of us by name and we strive to do the same. May God, who calls you, bring to completion the good work he has begun in you.
