It’s a very necessary first step.
Before construction can begin on the new Sacred Heart Cathedral, site work needs to be completed and that process started in conspicuous fashion on March 16.
Merit Construction used heavy equipment to begin clearing property for the placement of a new bridge and driveway that will be used by the public during the actual cathedral construction—scheduled to start in June.
Fred Atkins, supervisor for Merit Construction, was on-site on March 16 to oversee the nine person effort that included the mulching of fallen trees.
The beginning of work coincided with spring break for students and staff at Sacred Heart Cathedral School.
The new bridge is pre-cast and will be placed in three segments over Fourth Creek at a location just north of where the current entrance bridge is located.
The new driveway will be for public use, allowing construction crews to use the current entrance once construction begins in June.
The ceremonial groundbreaking for the new Sacred Heart Cathedral will take place April 19.
