This new year of 2025 is an extraordinary one in the life of the Church, a Year of Jubilee when Pope Francis has invited us to look forward to the great hope that sustains us as people of faith.

On Jan. 4, the vigil of the feast of the Epiphany, the Diocese of Knoxville opened its participation of the Jubilee Year with a Mass celebrated by Bishop Mark Beckman at the Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Opening the Holy Door to St. Peter's Basilica on Christmas Eve, the pope will formally inaugurate the Jubilee Year 2025 with its individual, parish and diocesan pilgrimages and with special celebrations focused on specific groups from migrants to marching bands, catechists to communicators and priests to prisoners.

Perhaps the call of Pope Francis to “cling to the cross of Christ,” which is our only true anchor in the storms of life, is part of the answer. We are called to be “Pilgrims of Hope” in the darkest moments.
