Bishop Richard F. Stika and Father David Boettner, rector of Sacred Heart Cathedral, donned hard hats May 29 to perform a symbolic gesture on the construction site of the new cathedral.

The bishop and Father Boettner signed their names in the just-poured concrete of the footers for the new north bridge on the Sacred Heart campus. The concrete span connecting Northshore Drive to the campus will be put in place June 8.

Major site preparation is expected to begin within the next two weeks.

Initial site preparation began immediately after the April 19 groundbreaking for the new cathedral.

The cathedral is expected to be completed in late 2017.
