The Shrine of Our Lady, Virgin of the Poor

South Pittsburg

The Shrine of Our Lady, Virgin of the Poor, is located on a 600-acre expanse near New Hope, about 30 miles west of Chattanooga and 140 miles southwest of Knoxville.

The shrine is a replica of the original in Banneaux, Belgium, where Mary appeared to a young girl nine times from January to March 1933. Handmade by monks and local lay craftspeople, the shrine was dedicated in 1983, the 50th-anniversary year of the apparitions. It is the only shrine in the United States dedicated to the Virgin of the Poor.

The shrine is open year-round. Marian devotions are held at 2 p.m. on Sundays during May and October.

Directions
