The Catholic Center at ETSU
The Catholic Center at ETSU is a ministry to the Catholic students and faculty of East Tennessee State University. Since 1968 there has been a Catholic ministry presence at ETSU. The Center has a well established history at ETSU and one that continues to grow and develop!
The Center is located in the Tree Streets neighborhood across University Pkwy. from ETSU. It is an easy walk from campus. The Center itself is a large house which was built in 1912. The first floor of the Center is the main gathering area and kitchen. The basement of the house has been converted to a chapel where Sunday and weekday liturgies are celebrated. On the second floor of the Center is located the Diocesan House of Discernment where men who are discerning the possibility of entering seminary to study for the priesthood can live for a time.
The Catholic Center Weekly schedule for 2010/2011 (beginning August 29, 2010):
Sunday: 6:00 p.m. Mass with Appetizers afterwards and 8:30 p.m. simple/reflective Mass
Monday: 8:30 a.m. Mass
Tuesday: 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. – free lunch for students
Wednesday: 5:15 p.m. Mass followed by free dinner (after dinner there are often opportunities for group discussion and/or social activities)
Friday: 12 noon Mass
Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered on the first and third Sundays of the month from 5:15 – 5:45 p.m. and also available by appointment.
In addition to the normal weekly schedule other activities are offered at various times throughout the year. Some of these activities are: Scripture Study, Faith Study and Discussion Groups, Hiking Trips, Retreats (Single Day and Weekend), Neighborhood Halloween Haunted House, Christmas Party, Mardi Gras, “Faith in Film” Movie Nights, March for Life in Washington, D.C., Freshman Group, Graduate Student Group, Men’s and Women’s Groups, Community of Sant’Egidio, Leadership Development Opportunities, Wednesday Night Topics and Discussions, Spring Break Mission Trip, Service Opportunities, various Social Activities and Prayer Opportunities, plus more…
